Cutlery Care & Handling

Choosing the right cutlery can be a challenge – with so many amazing fillet and boning knives to choose from it can be hard to know which make and model is exactly right for you. When you do finally select the ideal knife for each food preparation and serving task then you want to be certain to handle and care for it in such a way that it will offer many years of service. That’s why cutlery care and accessories are almost as important as the cutlery itself.

Take storage for example – if you simply toss all of your knives into a gadget drawer you risk nicking the blades and damaging the cutting edge on each utensil plus it can be difficult to reach in and grab something without getting hurt. That’s why knife bocks are so popular – they keep each knife close at hand while protecting the individual blades. A magnetic knife rack is another good storage option; other knife storage options include a knife roll and individual knife protectors.

If you have assembled an eclectic collection of knives over time then it’s not likely they all fit in the same knife block. Two unique knife storage options are available – for the budget-conscious you may wish to use a jar or box filled with rice. Knives can be inserted blade-first into the rice which also helps to reduce moisture and keep the knives rust-free. The commercial solution to the eclectic knife storage problem is the Kapoosh® knife storage system – it is a wooden box filled with plastic rods which somewhat resemble blades of grass. Again the knife is inserted blade-first into the plastic rods which are designed to accommodate virtually any size and shape of knife.
