Cutlery Care & Handling
Choosing the right cutlery can be a challenge – with so many amazing fillet and boning knives to choose from it can be hard to know which make and model is exactly right for you. When you do finally select the ideal knife for each food preparation and serving task then you want to be certain to handle and care for it in such a way that it will offer many years of service. That’s why cutlery care and accessories are almost as important as the cutlery itself.
Take storage for example – if you simply toss all of your knives into a gadget drawer you risk nicking the blades and damaging the cutting edge on each utensil plus it can be difficult to reach in and grab something without getting hurt. That’s why knife bocks are so popular – they keep each knife close at hand while protecting the individual blades. A magnetic knife rack is another good storage option; other knife storage options include a knife roll and individual knife protectors.
If you have assembled an eclectic collection of knives over time then it’s not likely they all fit in the same knife block. Two unique knife storage options are available – for the budget-conscious you may wish to use a jar or box filled with rice. Knives can be inserted blade-first into the rice which also helps to reduce moisture and keep the knives rust-free. The commercial solution to the eclectic knife storage problem is the Kapoosh® knife storage system – it is a wooden box filled with plastic rods which somewhat resemble blades of grass. Again the knife is inserted blade-first into the plastic rods which are designed to accommodate virtually any size and shape of knife.

Nice one. great gadget you have for your jnives.
It’s important to have high quality knife and be able to have the right knife for the right use for maximum efficiency and safety.
Knives are integral kitchen utensils. Good quality knives is just apt to be stored in safe storage. you have presented good storage options. I’ll settle for knife bocks.
This is very important whenever you prepare a meal. Thanks for sharing!
Care and handling must be indispensable in any home or kitchen management undertakings. The idea of using a jar or box is brilliant for the budget conscious.
I think we have this one in our kitchen … but cant recognize the different function of one knife from the rest since i barely cook or prepare food. … am not really a kitchen person …
Taking proper care of knives ensures easier cutting tasks in the kitchen.
definitely a must for us chefs. thanks for sharing, mel.
There are some kitchen organizers that you can buy so you can place your knives safely and easily. I would rather use them than those blocks where it stands by itself because they accumulate fungus inside.
I am guilty of not taking care of my knives. I have different kinds of knifes but only use 2 of it most of the time. I guess I have to think about buying a knife block and stop tossing it the drawer. Thanks for the tips =)
My husband is obsessed with cutlery. He does the cooking in the house.
Unfortunately his choices are always so expensive.
In the kitchen, while cooking we really need different knives suit for what we are going to cut or slice. That is why we need to handle it with care. Nice read by the way. ^_^
you know what’s funny? We actually have only 1 knife bock in our kitchen. But we have plenty of knives.. the funny part is that our house help tries to insert like 2 knives in one slot.. crazy! I should probably just buy more to help with the remaining knives handle and care.
wonder what’s the advantage of a Kapoosh brand over the other brands of cutleries…
i don’t usually pay much attentions to the knives in our house. Haha! Thanks for the tips.
I’m a bachelor living on my own and I’m guilty of not storing my knives in a proper holder. They’re with my other utensils, and so far, this works well for me. SHOULD I get more, perhaps I’ll ‘upgrade’ to a proper holder
true!!! it is a challenge to know which is the right knife for every purpose. i wish i had a great collection. it will make life a lot easier as I love cooking.
Well, cutlery should really be handled with care. Kung mga adults nga nahihiwa minsan, mga bata pa kaya?
A very useful tool in the kitchen. I would recommend this to my mom.
I have a complete set of cutlery given by my mom. She saw that my kitchen utensils and tools were incomplete, so every now and then she would give something. But the cutlery set is my favorite so far
KNIVES are very dangerous utensils and having a safe keeper is a must to every kitchen to avoid any accidental incidents.
wow, I have wooden box but not sure if it is filled with plastic rod.this one is the best so far.
I remember that one of my dad’s favorite set of knives is the Sheffield brand. it’s one of those few knives that i think has high quality steel but i also appreciate your tips and recommendation regarding the proper care of knives.
How do you clean that though?
My grandma owns a couple of knives, but she only uses three of them and everything else is still in it’s original packaging.
She usually hangs it on hooks, instead of putting it on drawers or the wooden box thing. It’s out of reach of children
Cool to see such posts that discusses kitchen utensils. Amazing indeed to know the different kinds and types of Knives as well as how to handle them with care.
Is there a Kapoosh® knife storage system available here in the Philippines? If yes, where can I check out one and usually how much does it cost?
We have a basic one like that at home. ^_^
